Site Design

This is a pretty amazing way of understanding the user experience of your site - it records the pages they visit, the movements of their mouse, and how they fill in a form. This would be of special use to anyone using those mile-long sales pitches with lots of testimonials and benefits (and the price buried within a paragraph near the bottom). You’d soon learn if people just skip to the bottom and search for the price… RobotReplay is presently free!

BTW, it also records key clicks, and there are paid alternatives:

TapeFailure - $8 - $98/month (with a one week free trial).

ClickTale - Free - $99/month

See the preview here. It is now filled instead of an outline, and is two-tones of blue instead of one. My 2yo could have achieved that!

I’m always a fan of differentiating two words when they are used to form one word, ie OzWebmasters - either using color, font, style or capitalization. They should have done this from the start, emphasising the two important words PAY and PAL.

When you have the number of visitors (and resources) of Google, it makes sense to actually use A/B/C/D/E testing.

The Google example shows 5 GMail sign-up buttons, but they could just as easily have had 25 variations. When the question is as straight-forward as “what % of visitors to this page sign up”, without caring about the quality of the sign up, then the raw winner should be presented all the time - nothing more to consider.

Of course, if you were measuring things such as likelihood to sign up for other services, become a paying customer, value of purchases, repeat purchases… then simply what gets the most clicks is too simplistic.

A/B testing is usually always cost effective to implement, unless your traffic is really low.

It never ceases to amaze me how many business web sites have blatantly poor spelling, and yet they are hoping to exude a professional presence. How hard is it to spell check a web page?

Like this example. They are selling MFA (made-for-adsense) sites, full of dubious content, deliberately designed to feed Google’s spider and get easy money from people visiting & clicking on ads. Anybody can place AdSense ads on their site, so what they are therefore selling is professionally written content, like this:

Bags made from leather are top quality. It will last for a long time especially if it’s maintained properly. Leather is quite popular, you can find many items made from leather like shoes, belts, wallets, etc. and the most common are bags.

But on their home page, they drop the ball with this:
